How in the heck do the Pinterest moms do it? How do they get their babies to sit still enough to adorably stamp their tiny handprints and footprints perfectly? They must have unicorns do it, because from where I’m standing, it seems like an impossible task. I’m here to tell you right now that you will NEVER be able to achieve that level of perfection. However, you can still create adorable art to gift to friends and family. It will look like crap…but they will LOVE it.
The title says it all, folks.
Here’s how to lower your expectations when doing a Pinterest craft with your baby.
Go ahead. Just start by saying this out loud.l:
“I will NOT be able to get my baby to cooperate with my artistic vision.”
Want to know why your baby won’t cooperate with your artistic vision? Because the only vision your baby has…is to EAT whatever his hands touch. Also…he’s a baby. He doesn’t know what artistic vision is.
For this art-session, Max and I decided to make a classic Valentine to send to all his grandmas and aunts. We selected this particular beauty from Pinterest as our inspiration:
Now that you have a goal to work towards… go ahead and get your crafting station set up. Strip your baby down to his diaper and strap him in to his chair. Put an old towel over his tray.
Notice that he’s already putting his hands in his mouth. Make a mental note: as soon as you dip your baby’s hand in paint, you aren’t going to be able to take your hands off of his wrist, or an invisible magnetic force will pull his hand directly to his mouth, and then you’ll have a whole other problem to deal with.
Carefully dip his hand in paint. Don’t let go.
Then, take his hand and press it on the paper.
Then watch in horror as he immediately starts moving his hand all over the paper, ruining that perfect hand print.
Wipe the paint off of your baby’s hands, and set the papers to the side to dry. While you’re at it, dry your tears too and try to embrace your baby’s talent for modern art.
Move the towel so it’s under your baby’s feet. Repeat process, dipping his feet in paint and carefully pressing it onto the paper.
Set the papers to the side to dry. Be careful not to step on that Cheerio on the floor! If you crush it, your baby can’t find it three days later and eat it. Wipe the paint off of your baby’s feet.
After you’re finished, you should be left with something that looks like this…
After your cards are dry, make sure to forget about them until two weeks after the date that you intended to mail them to your family and friends. Write an adorable rhyming message in sub-par hand lettering on the front (also noting that you will NEVER be Pinterest-level-good at that skill either).
Open it up and finish your cute rhyming message in cursive. It’s okay not to commit to the hand-lettering. You know you’re not very good at it anyway, and besides…they’re going to hang the card on the fridge so you won’t even be able to see the inside.
Finish it off with a little chicken-scratch print…
Voila! And there you go! You and your baby just created an adorable, sub-par Pinterest craft, that all your friends and family will love….when they finally get it….
…..next year…..
Embrace the chaos, mamas.
