Spring Break Appendectomy

I had planned on using my spring break to get a jump start on creating a backup of blog posts, cleaning like a crazy woman, organizing the nursery, and doing some meal prep for when the baby comes…however…life had other plans.

I spent the first day of break accomplishing my cleaning-like-a-crazy-woman goal. Every nook, every corner, every baseboard got the once over. I was completely exhausted, but still managed to make Bryce’s favorite dinner (my copy-cat Olive Garden homemade shrimp alfredo–which I’ll share later). He came home, and said his stomach hurt a little bit, and he wasn’t too hungry. Normally, even if he’s hungry, he makes room for my alfredo, so I was a little worried. After dinner, he took some medicine for what he thought was gas, and it didn’t help. We went to bed, and he struggled to get comfortable the whole time. I could tell he was in pain, and we talked about going to the hospital, but we decided to wait to the morning to see if it would get any better. An hour and a half later, he woke me up and said we needed to go the Emergency Room. I jumped up, put my clothes on and off we went, my sweet husband shivering with chills and a painful tummy.

We got there, and they ran some tests, confirming our suspicions…appendicitis. They told us he’d have surgery in the morning. They moved us upstairs to a room, and we slept for a few hours before they woke us up to take Bryce to pre-op. One of our wonderful friends from church who is a resident at the hospital we went to was working a 24 hour shift that night, and got off just as they were prepping Bryce for surgery. I was exhausted, hungry, and feeling overwhelmed being there in the hospital…and then Jordan walked in with breakfast for me. It was so wonderful to see a familiar face right then, and get some food in me. Being so far away from family this past year has definitely not been easy…but we’ve found a new family with our wonderful church community here, which has made this place so special for us.

Bryce came out of the surgery just fine…like a total champ…and he had all the nurses laughing as he was coming off of the anesthesia. I heard his voice from down the hall, and as they wheeled him in to the room, the nurse looked at me and said, “Boy…you sure have a talker on your hands!” Bryce was starving when he came back, so he ordered a cheeseburger from the hospital menu, and downed it like it was a normal day. Jordan’s wife, Katelyn was sweet enough to bring me lunch at the hospital so I didn’t have to leave. And as the day progressed, there was no keeping Bryce down…he was up on his feet walking around the hospital just a few hours later.

They let us go home around dinner time, and it was almost impossible to convince this man that he needed to rest for the next couple of days.

Even though I didn’t get to spend my spring break doing what I had planned, it turned out to be even better. Yes, the appendicitis and surgery were less than ideal, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The surgery allowed us an extra few days to spend together before the baby comes, which I cherished so much. I got to spend the week with my wonderful husband, hanging out, watching Netflix, and even make a trip back home to Indianapolis on the weekend for our baby showers and maternity pictures. More to come on that later…

It’s funny how God works sometimes, and gives us big reminders to slow down and enjoy the little moments.
